Grow’s Bake Off will challenge 12 businesses and four charities to bake an entry to be judged at the North Show.

‘We believe this event has the potential to be very popular in the future, but we are starting small this year by confining it to businesses and charities we are involved with. The aim is eventually to open the competition island-wide to include organisations and schools,’ said Grow’s general manager Karen Blanchford.

Costs for the big build are covered, but operational costs continue to grow, as the charity expands and increases the areas of training it can provide.

To encourage healthy eating, all entries are invited to include a locally-grown fruit or vegetable in their creation. The bake off will include an entry fee and a cake sale following the judging. It is being sponsored by Creasey’s Cookshop and M&S Guernsey.

Managing director Peter Creasey will be a judge for the event.

‘Grow is a charity we are keen to support as we very much align with their ethos and what they have achieved is such a great example of what community is capable of,’ he said.

‘This initiative is a light-hearted way of bringing together different elements of our community and has the potential of becoming a major local challenge.’

The bake off will take place at the North Show in the Lloyds Bank marquee.

The winning company or charity will receive a hamper, with a special prize for the star baker, and all contestants will be presented with a souvenir wooden spoon. Judging will take place at 2pm on Wednesday 23 August. Spectators are welcome.
