The car has replaced the oldest of four Hyundai i10s which between them deliver about 110 meals a day across the island.

Food is prepared by the PEH catering department and the delivery duties are taken on by more than 250 volunteers during the week, working in four teams of two.

‘We replace the cars every five years when they come to the end of their warranty,’ said Meals on Wheels’ organiser Nikki Martin.

On this occasion the oldest car in the fleet will be kept on for use by the charity’s handyman. All of the cars are provided by sponsors and when they are due to be replaced the sponsor is contacted again to ask if they want to continue their support by providing another vehicle.

This was the second car donated by the combination of the club and the show and Paul Allaway from the Lions said that it was purchased with funds that were raised during the Guernsey Together event, held in conjunction with the Leo Club, and the North Show in 2020, at a time when the club was unable to hold the Donkey Derby and the show was also unable to take place.

That raised between £30,000 and £40,000 and the money it made has been distributed among charities and good causes ever since.
