Volunteers get together for one last time

VOLUNTEERS involved in the NatWest Island Games came together for one last time as the week came to a close, forming a guard of honour around the track as the athletes took their leave before putting the catering facilities at the Garenne Stand to good use for a celebratory party.

Director of volunteers for the event was Wayne Bulpitt who said that a total of 1,320 people had given their time to ensure the event ran smoothly.

Jobs included car park attendants, marshalling during events, assisting with spectator safety, helping out with the live streaming, running merchandise stalls and scoring, among many.

The volunteers also included the sports co-ordinators as well as others who played a part only in the opening and closing ceremonies.

There was a wide cross-section of people involved, too. ‘We appealed to individuals from all backgrounds and of all ages and experiences,' Mr Bulpitt said.

Many were involved throughout the week and while some took time off work, others fitted work around the Games.

‘At the very outset we called for anybody that had an infectious smile and a “will-do” attitude and the feedback we’ve had since the games finished is that quite a few individuals were outstanding in all of these aspects.’
