Runway Run will benefit Air Search this year

PLANES will be replaced by people for one night only on Saturday 2 September, with joggers given a unique opportunity to run on the runway.

A briefing for a previous Runway Run which this year will benefit Air Search.

Organised by Channel Islands Air Search, and sponsored by BDO Guernsey, entrants will convene at the Guernsey Aero Club for a 5km run, scheduled to get under way at approximately 10.30pm.

The event is open to anyone over the age of 16, with tickets priced at £25.

All money raised from ticket sales and additional donations goes towards CIAS.

Organiser David Hugo was optimistic that most of the 500 spaces would be filled by the day of the event.

‘This is the third time we have hosted the event. Previously it was Crimestoppers who hosted it for five years, and they used to make use of our hangar for the warm-up before the run. It made sense for us to take it over.’

He hoped that the event would raise more than £10,000 for the charity, with the prize of a trial flying lesson being awarded to the runner who raises the most sponsorship.

‘We obviously want to raise as much as we can. This is our flagship fundraising event,' Mr Hugo said.

Prizes will be awarded to the first male and female finishers.

Mr Hugo said that planning for the event had been long and intricate, with a number of parties involved in its organisation. Security is particularly strict.

‘Obviously we have had to liaise with the airport and Aero Club, but also Forest and Le Rondin schools, who have very kindly let us use their car parks for the evening.

‘Volunteers from Guernsey Civil Protection will also be helping us run the event, while staff from St John’s Ambulance will be on-hand to offer medical assistance should it be needed.’

He added that the charity was well-equipped to deal with a call-out should it happen on the night.

‘We have every possible base covered in terms of an emergency. All we are praying for now is good weather and no flight delays.’

Runway ride delayed by late flight

A CHARITY cycling event that was scheduled to take place on the runway on Saturday evening did not go ahead due to a delayed flight coming in.

The Runway Ride, organised by financial services provider Highvern and the Smile For Georgie Foundation, will be held at a later date.
