Moores renames its restaurant as Anni’s Hideaway
THE Hideaway restaurant at Moores Hotel is to be renamed Anni’s Hideaway in honour of the woman who inspired it some 30 years ago.
Anni Bichard died in June and in the announcement the hotel said that her family had given the re-naming its blessing.
Mrs Bichard was born Anni Sendlhofer in Bad Hofgastein, a small village in Austria, and studied to be a pastry chef.
After working in Switzerland she came to be a patissier at Le Chalet Hotel in Guernsey, which was co-owned by her uncle, Andre Sendlhofer, who was also co-owner of Moores.
This was supposed to be for just one season but after meeting her future husband, Chris, she stayed and the couple went on to have a daughter, Maggie.
It was Mr Sendlhofer and Anni who had the idea of opening the Patisserie at Moores, which ended up being relaunched as The Hideaway in 2011 with Mrs Bichard as manager.
Sarnia Hotels’ managing director Karel Harris, Mr Sendlhofer’s daughter, said her father had often enjoyed traditional afternoon teas in London hotels but they had yet to feature in Guernsey, so the Patisserie featured Mrs Bichard’s ‘famous strudels and sachertorte’ on the menu.
Mrs Bichard was the heart and soul of the restaurant, she said.
‘It seemed an appropriate tribute to rename it “Anni’s Hideaway” as so many guests used to say we will meet at “Anni’s” and it ensures we will strive to offer the same friendly and warm service as she did, along with her wonderful cakes.’
