Nominations for Pride of Guernsey close on Sunday
THERE are just a few days left to nominate islanders for the Guernsey Press Pride of Guernsey awards.
The newspaper awards, which aim to recognise the wonderful things done by ordinary islanders, are in their eighth year and nominations have been flooding in this year.
More than 300 nominations have been submitted so far for more than 200 people across the 15 categories.
‘It has been great to see islanders putting forward the people they feel are important to our community,’ said Guernsey Press editor James Falla.
‘Many of the stories have been heart-warming and inspiring, and the awards show what a great place this island can be.’
There have been nominations in all the categories, but each year the numbers for each category vary.
This year the teacher of the year category has been a runaway success, with more than 40 nominations. There has also been strong interest in the grandparents and customer service categories.
It is hoped that in the coming days there will be more nominations in the neighbour, young achiever, diversity and sustainability categories, as these have seen fewer people put forward so far.
‘The quality of the nominations have been great, but it would be wonderful to see more submitted so islanders can hear more wonderful stories from all across island life,’ Mr Falla said.
The nominations close at midnight on Sunday.
Islanders will then have a chance to vote for who they think should win, with the top three in each category going on to a shortlist.
The winners will be announced at an awards evening in October.
