Miss Brown was presented with the bursary by outgoing Gila president Henry Simpson and successor Vicky Olivier at the Royal Court yesterday.

A former Blanchelande student, Miss Brown, 21, has recently graduated with a first class honours degree in geography from the University of Exeter, and will commence a postgraduate diploma in law course with the University of Law in Exeter in September.

This will put her on the road to qualifying as a solicitor.

‘I really enjoyed my geography degree, but when I heard about the possibility of doing a one-year law conversion course it sounded really appealing,’ she said.

Miss Brown has already completed several stints of work experience with local law firms including Walkers and Collas Crill.

She is currently undertaking two weeks’ experience with Babbe.

‘I’m not sure which area of law I want to go into yet as I haven’t started my studies properly, but from my work experience I have liked a lot of the different departments, and going to court,’ she said.

The bursary consists of an award of £1,000 and complimentary membership of Gila with career mentoring for the bursary year.

Miss Brown said that she planned to take advantage of her membership whenever able.

Advocate Jenny McVeigh said that the Gila committee had been impressed by Miss Brown’s commitment to pursuing a career in law on-island when she finished her studies.

‘Her application was really concise and clear, and we liked her answers to our questions, as well as her personal statement and CV.’
