And the move looks set to be debated the same day Herm pupils are due to start full-time at Vauvert Primary School.

Deputy David De Lisle has been leading the push to get the matter looked at again.

It follows an announcement by Education, Sport & Culture in May that the small Herm school room would be shut for a year on a trial basis, with children travelling by ferry to Guernsey to attend Vauvert instead.

The move will save £60,000 to £85,000 year, but ESC said the decision was driven more by the challenges for the teacher teaching mixed ages, when there was only a handful of pupils.

Deputy De Lisle has said it was impractical to expect young children to travel by ferry every day, and that closing the school would make it harder for the island to recruit staff.

The requete calls for Education to reinstate the school.

Among the signatories were four deputies who sat on ESC during the last term of the States – John Gollop, Carl Meerveld, Lester Queripel and David De Lisle.

The requete has also been signed by deputies Yvonne Burford, Chris Blin and Steve Falla.

They have requested that it is debated at the first States meeting after the summer, which starts on Wednesday 6 September – the day States school pupils are set to return to the classroom.
