Walking for charity helping her husband
A WOMAN will undertake a sponsored walk later this month to support of her husband, who has vascular dementia.
Margaret Domaille, 65, is walking 10 miles from Pleinmont to Town to raise money for the Guernsey Alzheimer’s Association on Saturday 26 August.
She said that the help the charity had given her since her husband Leonard’s diagnosis had been uplifting, and had inspired her to give back.
‘I have been going to meetings at the charity’s headquarters near Delancey Park and I just really appreciate the chance to be able to talk to carers in a similar situation to me.
‘I haven’t been by myself and it’s just meant so much to me.’
The couple have also received support from the Willows Day Centre, which Mr Domaille attends twice a week.
The route Mrs Domaille plans to walk will see her hike up from Pleinmont car park and walk all the way along Torteval Road before reaching the Mallard complex.
From there she will continue along Forest Road and through St Martin’s village and into town, finishing her walk at North Beach car park.
She will finish the walk at North Beach car park.
She plans to set off at about 10am, and hopes to complete the walk in just over two hours.
‘This won’t be the first time I’ve done this walk. In 2018 I did it to raise money for a publicly-accessible defibrillator machine at the Salvation Army at L’Islet after my husband had a heart attack and was saved by paramedics who were using a defibrillator.
‘I know I can finish the walk, so doing it at my age doesn’t mean anything to me, especially when it’s for a cause that is so close to my heart.’
Mrs Domaille has already received support from her former employer, Guernsey Electricity, which is providing sponsorship.
In return, she will wear a branded t-shirt while she walks.
‘Since I left the company we have kept in close contact. It’s very generous of them to support me.
'If other people want to donate then they can pick up forms from their office on the Bridge.’
