18 apartments and commercial unit plans for eastern seafront

A NEW development of 18 apartments and a commercial unit could be built on Guernsey’s eastern seafront.

Plans to demolish 15 & 16 Glategny Esplanade have been submitted to the Development & Planning Agency.

The application is by Westland Holdings and the current buildings, to the south of Muse cafe, are described as ‘empty and no longer fit for purpose’.

The project would see an office on the ground floor of the new structure on the seafront.

There would then be four storeys of flats above it.

The would be a gap in middle of the site for parking and a courtyard.

At the back of the site would be a seven-storey structure, containing flats.

Tony Rowbotham, head of office at Savills, said it had been looking at the site for some time.

‘We have decided apartments would make best use of the site, with there being a well-publicised shortage of residential accommodation in the town centre, be it for sale or for rent,’ he said.

Most of the units will be of one- or two-bedrooms, while there will be one offering three bedrooms. They were designed ‘to maximise the views over the QEII Marina towards Herm’.

The largest apartment would be on the top two floors of the structure at the back of the site, and would also have a roof terrace.

A small commercial unit situated on the ground floor would be for users looking for small offices, retail or hospitality premises, said Savills.

There will be 18 individual storage units, also on the ground floor, which will provide a secure space for large items including bicycles and sports equipment.

‘Careful consideration has been given to the design to ensure this development meets the requirements of the Island Development Plan and building regulations by providing a comprehensive solution in this urban location,’ said architect Paul Dowinton.
