With some floats months in the making and others pieced together at the last minute, it was a rewarding experience for all of those who entered floats, as the rain held off for the duration.

Inspired by the Barbie Film, the Harris family took the opportunity to parade in pink.

‘I decided to do a Barbie theme on 1 August,’ said Ness Harris.

‘I was going to do a fresh flower float but I saw the film and thought I just had to a Barbie-themed one.’

She got everyone she knew involved in making the flowers to ensure the float was completed in time. It took more than 8,000 flowers to decorate the vehicle.

Anna Douglas, 10, and Felix Cumberland-Dodd, 12, were dressed up as different Barbies and rode in the pink Barbie car.

Meanwhile for one islander with a history in the Battle of Flowers, she said she was making her final appearance. Debbie Le Page entered a decorated bicycle, Fairy Fantasy. ‘I had already started making flowers about two months ago, and it takes longer to make the flowers than it does to stick them on,’ she said.

‘The fairies are made out of bubble wrap, some of the flowers are made of plastic bags and others are made of thermal lining from some curtains I took down, but it meant I had different colours.’

She said that she entered floats in the Battle of Flowers for 25 years with her family, and then did another stint with her grandchildren but had not take part for a few years.

When a friend said that getting involved in the Battle was on their bucket list, she entered it again, however said that it would be her last time in the arena – especially after she had to walk her decorated bicycle to the show from Grandes Rocques yesterday morning, when she was unable to fit it in a van.
