Ms O’Brien’s book, Diminishing Returns, will include looking at the role of private equity in services used by communities daily.

She will meet politicians, current and former financial services professionals and others to learn more about the development of the industry locally and its effects on the island. She met Guernsey Press senior reporter Matt Fallaize to discuss the island’s machinery of government.

Ms O’Brien is a leader writer and assistant editor for the Guardian. She is also a contributing writer to the Long Read and Guardian Books.

She has previously worked for the New Statesman, as a reporter in Washington DC.

W&N, which has UK publication rights for the book, said Ms O’Brien was ‘inspired to write the searing and captivating book after interviewing tenants who were fighting back against the private equity company Blackstone, which became part of a long read for the Guardian’.
