Retiring consultant is thanked for her service

ESTABLISHING a retinal service in Guernsey that meant patients did not have to travel to the UK for treatment was cited as a major achievement during her career by consultant ophthalmologist Suzie Dorey.

Miss Dorey has retired from the Medical Specialist Group after 23 years. She joined the group from Moorfields Eye Hospital, where she completed her higher specialist training in ophthalmology.

At that time the eye clinic was in a separate building and she became the department’s third consultant.

‘Over time the department has expanded to have four eye consultants, more diagnostic equipment than ever, and a team of nurses, orthoptists, field technician and a trained retina injector,’ she said.

She established the retinal service at the MSG in 2014.

‘Our patients previously travelled to Southampton for their regular eye injections, so this investment has made treatment more accessible for many older patients who struggled with the journey off-island.’

More recently she led the initiative to enrol the MSG in the National Ophthalmology Database. This means it is able to formally audit its results for cataract surgery and audit starting treatment for macular degeneration.

‘I have enjoyed working with an amazing team who are committed to achieving high standards in health care and it has been rewarding to see colleagues extend their roles after supervised training. I shall miss treating my patients and working with my colleagues in the Southampton Eye Unit, which the MSG continues to have excellent links with.’

MSG chairman Dr Steve Evans thanked Miss Dorey for her many years of service and wished her well in her retirement.

‘She has been a real asset, not just to the ophthalmology team, but to the MSG in general, and she will be much missed by her colleagues and patients,’ he said.

Spending time hiking is among Miss Dorey’s plans for retirement and she aims to complete the last three Wainwright peaks out of 214 in the Lake District, as well as exploring more walking trails, travelling, and learning Italian.

She also intends to purse a range of creative courses and spend time in her garden.
