Soulsby wants clarity over GCSE results

AN ATTEMPT to get a fuller picture of Guernsey students’ attainment in English and maths at GCSE has been made by Heidi Soulsby, who has asked three formal questions of Education, Sport & Culture.

Deputy Soulsby has also asked how many local students did not take one or both of the exams.

The results as published by ESC last month showed that 54.9% of students at States schools achieved a level 4 (the old grade C) or above in English language or literature, and maths.

Deputy Soulsby’s first question seeks a breakdown of the percentages in English and maths separately.

She has also asked for the percentage of students who achieved a level 7 (A) or above in English and maths together and separately.

‘I felt that just publishing Level 4 and above gave no idea of how the more able students were doing,’ she said.

Her final question asks how many student did not take English or maths GCSEs.

‘Numeracy and literacy are crucial for the individual as well as the wider community and I thought the data provided didn’t give a full enough picture of where things stood,’ said Deputy Soulsby.

She had submitted written formal questions to ESC after, she said, failing to get a response when asking informally.
