Organiser Gary Sheppard said it was the third time the event had been held.

‘We phoned a lot of private bakers to see if they’d be interested in supplying something and we had a great response.

‘It’s been very well supported.’

He added that part of the reason for the event was in honour of his late wife Michelle, who had been a keen baker.

‘She used to raise money for charity with her baking so it’s nice to do it for her.’

More than £2,000 was from the event, with Mr Sheppard paying tribute to the generosity of those attending.

‘The pub regulars are usually very generous. Some donate more than £200. I’m still hoping that we knock past the £2,200 mark.’

Among the most popular cakes, Mr Sheppard said, were the gateaux.

‘They usually do very well.’

He added that a raffle was also going to take place, with entrants able to win a range of items from perfume to alcohol.

‘The top prize is a lounge carpet fitting, all done for the winner free of charge.’
