Dr Gilly Carr removed from Alderney post
DR GILLY Carr has been removed as Alderney’s representative to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.
She had represented the Channel Islands at the IHRA since June 2019, with the role jointly funded by the States of Guernsey and the States of Jersey.
But there have been issues between Alderney and the expert, after a video of her speaking at a panel discussion earlier this year saw her refer to part of the Alderney community as hostile to Holocaust experts.
She has since apologised and the video has been made private. But it provoked strong feelings, leading to Alderney’s Policy & Finance chairman Nigel Vooght confirming in the Alderney States meeting this week that she had been removed from representing Alderney.
‘We can confirm that we have received an apology from Dr Carr and we can confirm that in the circumstances we have rescinded the resolution appointing Dr Carr as our representative,’ he said yesterday, following his States comments.
‘We will issue a further statement next week.’
The Guernsey Press sent questions to Dr Carr asking how she felt about the move and seeking to clarify if she was representing the rest of the islands. She referred all queries to Lord Pickles' chief of staff and the Guernsey Press has sought to contact them. Lord Pickles is the UK’s post-Holocaust issues envoy and head of the UK delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.
A States of Guernsey spokesman confirmed that Dr Carr continued to represent Guernsey and Jersey at the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.
‘We have been made aware of Alderney’s recent decision in relation to representation,’ he said.
‘We are discussing this with the States of Alderney and cannot comment further while this review continues.’
