So far, it has raised £500 through its fundraising page, and has received corporate donations. The charity estimated it has raised around half of its target.

‘Most of the target will go towards the kit itself and the rest will be used on freight to get it over here and landscaping the area,’ said Wooden Spoon Guernsey’s chairwoman Karen Solway.

‘Companies have come forward offering to assist with the project, however if any others would like to get involved please get in touch.’

Replacing the spider’s net is not the only way the charity is planning to increase the safety of the area. It is also hoping to be able to extend the fencing that surrounds the park to also surround the pond, which is in the same area.

Wooden Spoon usually offers its support to disabled and disadvantaged children.

‘It’s not usually something that would be on our charter, but it is a free activity that can benefit all children,’ said Miss Solway.

‘It really is an iconic part of the park,’ added Wooden Spoon committee member Martyn Renouf.

The Giving.gg page has received donations and comments from people whose children loved the spider’s net or they used it when they were younger.

‘The reactions been lovely, we have had lovely comments on our Giving page and also in various groups on Facebook,’ said Miss Solway. ‘The response has definitely been warm and welcome.’

She added that the charity was looking to push the fundraising more by putting signs up around the park and holding events.

‘I would like to work with a sign company to get signs put up around the park with a QR code that will take people straight to the fundraising page,’ she said.

‘At the minute we have no planned fundraising events for this project, but if anyone has any ideas or would like to plan an event, please get in contact.’

As it stands, Wooden Spoon is hoping to have the new spider’s net installed by next spring.
