The business has its Town shops, as well as Marks and Spencer and M&S Simply Food branches. Creasey's managing director Peter Creasey confirmed the decision had been made yesterday afternoon. One consideration was whether it would be safe for staff to travel to work and whether there would be public transport running. The storm is expected to cause significant impact on coast roads during the storm and there could be damage to trees or structures affecting roads.

CT Plus will make an independent assessment of road conditions on Thursday to decide whether services can be safely operated.

‘This was the prudent decision,’ Mr Creasey said.

‘It is very, very unusual.’

He said another consideration was whether there would be food deliveries, with the freight services are disrupted. There have also been reports of panic buying at some shops.

‘We’ve been hit hard today,’ he said.

‘People are shopping ahead.’

He confirmed that a food delivery was received yesterday afternoon and there would be stock for people to buy today.

While Creasey’s was founded in the Victorian era, the business only relatively recently entered into the food market.

Mr Creasey said that meant the company understood the importance of opening for people to buy food, and this early decision was relatively unprecedented for the business.

‘I don’t think this has ever happened before,’ he said.

‘We usually manage to open.’

Channel Islands Co-op confirmed all its food stores would close at 7pm tonight and should be open again between noon and 7pm tomorrow.

Online deliveries will be carried out between noon and 5pm tomorrow, but this may change.

‘We want to reassure islanders that we’ll be taking all necessary precautions, and our colleague and customer safety is our priority.’

Waitrose confirmed both its shops were open, but this was being kept under review. Sandpiper, which runs Morrison’s and Iceland, is also keeping its position under review.

Condor has cancelled the Voyager fast ferry sailings today and Friday, while the Commodore Clipper – which carries passengers and freight – has had today’s and tomorrow’s sailings cancelled.

The Commodore Goodwill – Condor’s freight boat – was due to arrive this morning.
