Early reports seem to show that Guernsey has largely had a lucky escape from Storm Ciaran.

Although firefighters have spent the night dealing with fallen trees in many areas - especially in the Rue Charruee in Castel where it is understood that 12 trees have fallen - but so far there have been no reports of serious structural damage.

The winds have not reached the forecasted record-breaking speeds - but currently are blowing at 70mph, force nine. Wind speeds are expected to decline in the next hour or so.

Coastal flooding began on the east coast but as high tide approaches and wind direction changes, focus now switches to the west coast.

Ambulances were able to reach four medical calls during the night.

Fallen trees have this morning closed about a dozen roads, mainly in the Castel and St Andrew's.

Jersey appears to have been hit much more severely by the storm - three people have been taken to hospital and more than 40 people displaced from their homes.
