It is believed the man was working on a refuse lorry, which was operating in George Street in the early hours of the morning.

The road was closed in the morning to allow officers to conduct initial enquiries. It reopened at about 1.30pm.

States Works confirmed the man was one of its employees.

He has not been named.

Operations director Ian Gavet said: ‘Everyone at States Works was saddened to learn of the passing last night of our colleague.

‘He was a much liked and well-respected member of the team here, and will be greatly missed.

‘All our thoughts now are with his family at this sad time.’

Resident Janice Carre said she would usually hear the refuse truck, but on this occasion did not.

The property in which she occupies the ground floor flat lost some of its roof tiles as a result of Storm Ciaran and workmen were due there today to replace them.

‘I opened my curtains thinking the workmen were here early and had dropped something on the road.’

The scene of the incident had been cleared by the time residents started waking up.

Men working on the roof of the house said that the Fire & Rescue Service cleared the road shortly before it was reopened.

Another resident, who asked not to be named, also said she had heard nothing.

‘When I went outside to see my husband off at about 7.30am the road was cordoned off up by the corner. A policeman was there and he said there’d been an incident and that was it. He asked me if I’d heard anything at about 4am, but I hadn’t.’

A man who lived further down the hill said he was unaware of what had happened earlier.
