Recruitment event aims to help fill health service jobs locally
There is confidence that more health service jobs can be filled on-island, with an information event due to be held on Saturday.
Anyone of any age is being invited to find out about the opportunities available.
There are job vacancies across the service, said director of care delivery Elaine Burgess, with staff needed in house-keeping, catering and administration, as well as on the ‘front line’ of caring.
‘At the moment we have a large number of vacancies for healthcare support workers,’ she said.
There is a worldwide shortage of healthcare workers, with the World Health Organisation estimating there will be a projected shortfall of 10 million by 2030.
In the UK in December last year, one in 10 jobs were for people in healthcare.
Should the recruitment drive not find enough people to fill the jobs, they will be offered to non-islanders.
‘We know we can recruit on-island,’ said Mrs Burgess.
‘It would be great if people would pop up.’
There are jobs at the PEH, in children's and family services, mental health services and adult disability and community services.
Training will be given so the jobs are not just for those with experience.
‘This could be somebody who’s working in retail and it’s something they’ve always wanted to do. We’ve got a really good training package.’
Even if someone would like to take on part-time work to see if they like it, there are positions available in the bank system, where someone can work hours which suit them.
Staff from a range of different jobs will be available to talk about their roles.
‘If someone wants to train to be a nurse or do social work, we have lots of different opportunities,’ said Mrs Burgess.
She said the vacancies had arisen for a number of reasons, such as staff being promoted or those from outside the island leaving Guernsey.
The event is in the Beau Sejour Concourse from 10am to 2pm on Saturday
