Thousands of people expected for Boxing Day Dip
IT IS expected that as many as 3,000 people could descend on Cobo Bay for the annual Boxing Day swim.
‘It has become something of a Guernsey tradition,’ said Rob Shepherd, chairman of the Guernsey Cheshire Home, the beneficiary of funds raised through the swim.
Guernsey Cheshire Home’s annual costs are currently in excess of £1m. It receives no funding from the States or the Leonard Cheshire Home group and relies entirely on donations and fundraising.
Twelve full-time residents and respite visitors aged between 20 and 80 are provided care. Residents may be living with multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, spinal injuries, arthritis or permanent paralysis.
This year volunteers will carry buckets for cash donations, while a charity tent will sell its beanie hats and have card machines for donations and sales.
It is hoped that each participant will raise at least £5, which could be a substantial amount of money for the home in total.
Last year nearly 3,000 people turned up at Cobo beach last year, some in fancy dress. Cimandis gave out mince pies and offered mulled wine and hot drinks.
Event sponsor Skipton International has a proud history of supporting local community events and swims, with the Skipton Swimarathon also one of its big events every year.
‘Skipton is proud to support these events that make a real difference to the community. We all respect the fantastic work done by the Guernsey Cheshire Home,’ said chief executive officer Jim Coupe.
Mr Shepherd added: ‘We are thrilled that Skipton continues to partner with us and we look forward to raising much-needed funds for the Cheshire Home.’
The 'dipping time' for Boxing Day is 10.30am. Swimmers are asked to be ready for the klaxon by 10.20.
The Rockmount will supply free mince pies and mulled wine afterwards.
