The day started with a morning carol service at 10.30am, before guests tucked into lunch at just after noon.

Entertainment was provided after lunch in the form of games before the King’s speech at 3pm. Each attendee also given a bag of gifts before heading home.

Salvation Army officer Major Andrew Diaper-Clausen, who has been involved with the organisation for 32 years, said he wanted the occasion to be as sociable as possible for those who may otherwise be on their own at Christmas.

‘We always find that people come back every year and we are always pleased by how many want to volunteer as well,’ he said.

‘Some are more able than others so for those who can’t make it here today we also deliver meals to them, we want to spread as much goodwill as possible.’

Deputy Lester Queripel, who has been volunteering with the Salvation Army for the past 12 years, said it was heart-warming to be able to put smiles on so many faces.

‘There are a few new faces, but it’s lovely to watch strangers become friends over the course of an afternoon.

‘As a volunteer I’m also the designated host of a table, which means introducing people to each other and making sure everyone goes home happy with a goody bag at the end of day.’

Alan Morton has been coming to the Salvation Army’s Christmas Day for the last six years, and said he enjoyed the chance to reconnect with old friends.

‘Over the years I’ve met so many people through meetings at places like this and also through Age Concern.

‘I used to be the manager of Samuel Pepys in town so I recognise a lot of people who used to come into the shop as well.’

John Belloeil, who was attending the lunch for the first time, said he was looking forward to his food.

‘I’ve enjoyed spending time here so far, I volunteer at Grow so have come along with a few people from there.

‘It’s quite cold working outside at the moment so it’s nice to be in the warm here.’
