St Sampson’s High pupil is third in national art contest
A ST SAMPSON’S High School pupil has placed third in a national art contest sponsored by the Lions Club International Foundation.
Satang Yusong, 13, reached the national final of the ‘Peace Poster’ competition after winning both the St Sampson’s competition and then the South and Central England district final.
The annual competition, which has run for more than 20 years, is for 11, 12 and 13-year-olds who are asked to design a picture symbolising peace based on this year’s theme of ‘Dare to Dream’.
More than 30 local entries were received for this year’s competition.
Satang, who won a £50 Amazon voucher and a £75 cash prize as a result of her success, said that she got the inspiration for her design by looking at other artists’ work on visual social media site Pinterest.
‘I try to merge all of their work together and mix in some of my own ideas. My final piece is quite different from what I planned originally, planning isn’t really my thing.’
She thanked teacher Chloe Tyne for her help, adding that art was by far her favourite subject at school.
‘It’s something I do in my spare time if I have paper and a pen on me, as I love drawing.’
‘Satang is a brilliant pupil and so creative,' said Miss Tyne.
‘She and all of the other students really enjoyed the creative freedom the competition gave them.’
The artwork was judged by Lions Club of Guernsey youth chairman Paul Allaway, as well as president Rob Holder and local artist Tiffany Matthews.
Mr Allaway said that the references to peace running through Satang’s design prompted the judges to choose the work to be initially entered into the district final.
‘The drawing of an eye as the sun was a great idea, and her message going along with the drawing that “there isn’t always a second chance to fix it” really resonated with us.’
He also paid tribute to Les Beaucamps student Chloe Wooldridge, 11, who won her school’s competition and was also entered into the district category.
‘I’m very pleased for her and grateful to both of the schools for taking part.’
The club donated £100 to the art department of both schools.
