Christmas lights in Town are taken down

Christmas lights in Town started coming down yesterday and while work got under way to remove the street decorations, the calm conditions saw the Rotary Club of Guernsey taking down the Tree of Joy lights, too.

With the aid of the crane from Bob Froome and staff of Marine & General the 32 lengths of 32m long light cables came down in record time: ‘We started at about 8.30 and it took about half an hour. It’s gone very well indeed,’ said president Andy Salisbury.

They were taken to Stan Brouard Ltd where they will be stored for the year with a check being carried out in July or August to see which lights might need replacing.

Mr Salisbury he said he knew of a couple of the cables had gone but the tree as a whole had done well and even weathered Storm Ciaran soon after it was put up.

Not far from the Weighbridge roundabout, in Smith Street, FF Commercial had started taking down the Town festive lights.

The street had seen a canopy of lights, each of which was about 50m long said the company’s Mario Ferreira who was accompanied by Phill Le Cocq and Elvira De Silva.

Mr Ferreira had been called in several times over the weeks to repair failed lights, contacting Guernsey Electricity if necessary. ‘With the wind they just kept moving and breaking,’ he said.

But despite the storms the lights had survived relatively unscathed.

After Smith Street yesterday the company will be tackling the rest of the Town each Sunday for the next three or four weeks.

The lights are kept in a shed owned by Ferryspeed where they will be checked. Several fail each year, said Mr Ferreira and some, such as the strings of lights, cannot be repaired so have to be replaced in full.
