Purple Week will celebrate 150 years of animal shelter
The GSPCA is gearing up for its Purple Week campaign.
Founded in 1873, the animal shelter takes care of thousands of animals 24 hours a day, year-round, from dogs and cats to seals and birds.
Manager Steve Byrne said that without the shelter many animals would still be suffering.
‘Purple Week highlights our age because there aren’t that many charities that have been operating for as long as we have,’ he said.
‘We still stand for the same things like educating and supporting the public.
‘Without the generosity of the Guernsey community we would not exist. It has helped ensure we’ve lasted through all this time.’
Purple Week starts on 9 February with celebrations taking place until 19 February. The charity’s official anniversary is 14 February.
Mr Byrne said he previously had children donate from their pocket money, or selling paper planes for 10p each, which has also gone to the shelter.
He asked islanders to consider a fundraising opportunity.
‘Why not wear purple for the day? You could even dress as an animal for the day. From a sponsored silence to a wax, there are many ways you can raise funds to help animals in Guernsey,’ he said.
He said all money raised and item donations made a massive difference to the shelter, and also support its upcoming big build project.
He thanked all the companies, staff, volunteers and supporters who had supported the GSPCA over the years.
Purple Week is the charity’s biggest awareness and fundraising campaigns.
