The children combined to form one large choir and sang a range of songs from classic jazz, musicals and modern pop genres.

They performed with guest artists including Lydia White, who is currently playing Miss Honey in Matilda the Musical showing in the West End.

Other artists included the rapper MC Grammar and drummer Nandi Bushell.

Melrose Young Voices coordinator Tom Lewis said that the evening was the culmination of months of hard work, learning songs and dance moves.

‘The sound of 8,000 children all collaborating to sing together as a community is an incredible experience and the girls have taken away magical memories of performing at this prestigious venue,’ he said.

‘It helps them to understand that putting hard work into preparing for something results in something meaningful.’

Melrose headteacher Mary Lawson paid tribute to the organisers of the project.

‘Thank you to David Lawrence, Andy Instone and to all at Young Voices for an unforgettable event,’ she said.
