‘Good interest island-wide’ as Eisteddfod returns for 94th year
Hundreds of children and adults will be making their way to Beau Sejour from tomorrow as three weeks of performance classes get under way in this year’s Eisteddfod.
Music is up first with the classes starting at Beau Sejour Theatre at 2pm.
Eisteddfod general secretary Barbara Minta said there were more entries than ever in this year’s 94th festival.
‘There’s been very good interest island-wide,’ she said.
‘People say that it’s part of island life and it has to keep going.’
The most popular music class has always been the Songs From The Shows and this year 21 entries are listed in the 15-18 age group, which takes place at 2.40pm on Saturday, while 30 over-18s are due to take part in the adult class at 7.45pm next Wednesday.
But by far the biggest entry in this category is in the under-12s class, which takes place at 2pm on Saturday 2 March and has 39 entrants.
That is the final day of this year’s music section and will see the presentation of trophies after the evening session.
Capelles Church will play host to some of the music section’s classes on Sunday 25 February, starting at 2pm for juniors and 7pm for adults.
Speech and drama classes start on Monday 4 March with a morning session at 9.30, and ends following the afternoon session on Sunday 10 March, after which trophies will be presented.
Guernesiais classes this year will take place at Beau Sejour theatre on Wednesday 6 March, for juniors, and on Saturday 16 March in the Saumarez Room at Beau Sejour, for adults.
The art and craft exhibition runs from Tuesday 5 March to Friday 8 from 9am to 8pm, and Saturday 9 March from 9am-5pm at Beau Sejour.
A selection of winners from the music and speech and drama classes will take part in the annual concert on Tuesday 19 March, with tickets on sale from the 8th.
The final event of this year’s Eisteddfod is the artistic roller skating, which takes place on 18 May.
n Beau Sejour car park is expected to be very busy during the event and visitors to the centre are being encouraged to car share or use active travel where possible.
The leisure centre is a 15-minute walk from the Odeon car park and a 20-minute walk from North Beach.
