The fire began just after 4am but the cause is unknown at this stage.

A team of 15 firefighters have been in attendance, along with four water tankers.

‘When we arrived, we tried to make entrance into the building but it was already a deep-seated fire,’ Danny Joyce from Guernsey Fire told media at a briefing.

‘Therefore we could not stay in that building for very long and we had to withdraw. Our tactics from then on were to fight the fire from outside’.

The incident forced the closure of the Val des Terres and South Esplanade on Saturday morning with the public asked to close windows and doors at buildings in the path of smoke.
