‘Business as usual’ at Beetons despite parking changes

‘Business as usual’ is the message from the owner of Beetons Fish and Chip shop, despite changes to parking in the area.

Building work starting at the former Wolseley Plumb and Parts branch on Pitronnerie Road Industrial Estate led to barriers being placed along the roadside last Thursday.

Before this, many Beetons’ customers made use of the parking spaces outside the store when popping to get their food and the loss of those spaces, coupled with the limited parking at the chip shop itself, meant that if the two or three spaces outside the chip shop were occupied, the only option was for people to park down the length of the estate road instead.

‘Obviously on Thursday we were panicking a bit,’ said Beetons’ owner Andy Ashplant.

‘I knew the barriers were going up but I didn’t realise they were going to be on the edge of the road. They’ve got to do it for insurance purposes, apparently.’

The estate road is terre a l’amende, meaning that anyone leaving a vehicle along it is liable to a fine.

But Mr Ashplant met with a representative of States Property Services and the owner of the building site on Friday and an agreement has been reached.

People will be able to park for about 20 minutes while they collect their food from the chippy without having to worry about getting a parking fine, he said.

‘It’s not a huge issue,’ said Mr Ashplant. ‘Takings were normal for Thursday and Friday.

‘It’s business as usual.’

He was not sure how long the work was likely to take but suspected that it could be a few months.
