The incident occurred just before 3pm yesterday afternoon and led to Rue De L’Eclet, the road to St Saviour’s, being shut for almost an hour.

Store owner Martine Middleton said they had been sorting out shelves and restocking pet food inside the shop when the fire occurred.

‘A customer came in and said: “Do you know your shed’s on fire?” and we all rushed out,’ she said.

The small shed at the rear of the complex was used to store car-cleaning equipment.

‘We moved vehicles away from the fire as quickly as possible as we did not want it to spread,’ she said. ‘It could have been quite serious if it had got out of control.’

Two fire engines and police vehicles attended the scene, while traffic officers directed vehicles away from the area.

Mechanic Neil Sarre said he was mystified as to how the fire could had started.

‘There was just a pump and car cleaning equipment inside,’ he said. ‘We simply have no idea what caused it.’
