One-way system in Vauvert reversed due to roadworks
Vauvert’s one-way system flipped direction yesterday morning causing some disruption – and some strange looks and sensations – for motorists passing through Town, especially those dropping children off at school.
Guernsey Electricity is now working at the junction of the Grange and Doyle Road, with the crossroads blocked off, and the usual one-way flow of traffic has been reversed to go up Vauvert, along La Couperderie and out at the top of Victoria Road.
Vauvert pupils Faye Castle and Annabelle Ruddock, both aged seven, said that it was weird seeing traffic going the opposite way up the road.
They both walk about a mile to school each day with their parents, and meet each other halfway.
Their only concern was if someone forgot about the diversion and drove down the wrong way into the traffic.
Signs stationed along Brock Road and La Gibauderie warned drivers to ‘expect delays’, and yesterday morning traffic lined Les Gravees and down the Rohais, from Brock Road to the crossroads at Elm Grove, and up Vauvert, La Couperderie and Victoria Road.
Funeral director Geoffrey Savident decided to leave the car at home and walk his grandchildren to Vauvert School.
On Tuesday he had to park the car outside of the area and walk the rest of the way to school.
‘I’ve always liked walking so I don’t mind,’ he said.
‘The road has always been one-way so it’s still safe and it doesn’t feel that weird seeing cars drive the wrong way.’
Caretakers and teachers from Vauvert School were out in the road yesterday morning ensuring the safety of pupils, from getting out of the car on the opposite side to the school, to crossing at the top and bottom ends of the road.
Parking along Vauvert was suspended from 8am yesterday morning and will be suspended between 8am and 5pm daily until further notice.
Just car which had parked facing down the road had not been moved by its owner before the 8am suspension.
The driver arrived at about 8.30am and had to turn around the car around in the middle of the traffic to continue up the road.
This stage of the work and the knock-on diversions will be in place until 6 April.
