The market’s future was at risk due to a lack of helpers, but after a Guernsey Press article highlighted its possible closure, new volunteers came forward to help save the fortnightly market.

‘Thank you to those who came forward,’ said Jan Roberts, churchwarden of the Castel Church.

‘We could still use a couple more volunteers but we now have enough to keep the farmers’ market going.’

The market at Le Friquet Garden Centre takes place on Saturday mornings and the organisers have started a rota so any new volunteers are only needed once a month.

‘People only have to volunteer once a month for the morning, or even just set up and the first part of the morning or the second part of the morning and then packing everything up,’ said Mrs Roberts.

Of the four new volunteers, two of them are churchgoers and the other two live in the parish and saw the article in the Press and decided they would like to volunteer.

Mrs Roberts said that the farmers’ market would be ideal for young people doing their Duke of Edinburgh awards.

‘It’s a really good opportunity for Duke of Edinburgh students. We fly the flag for sustainability and local produce and it is a real community project,’ she said.
