The trailers, which replaced units which were more than 20 years old, were supplied by Guernsey’s Fire and Rescue Service to make sure that Herm remained well equipped to tackle a blaze.

‘In the case of a fire this team would be first on the scene, and would be tasked with trying to extinguish the fire or to control it until back-up can arrive from Guernsey,’ said Guernsey’s chief fire officer Jon Le Page.

Each trailer is a self-contained portable pumping unit which can deliver up to 1,000 litres of water at a pressure of 15 bar per minute, with associated hoses and nozzles.

They carry a seven-metre extending ladder and 2,000 litres of water in case a fire needs to be dealt with immediately before a supply can be established from water sources on the island.

They were designed by UK fire engine manufacturer Emergency One.

‘Crafting bespoke solutions for Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service and Herm Island was an inspiring challenge, where every detail was meticulously considered to optimise functionality, efficiency and safety,’ said design director Lee Dawson.

Herm chief executive Craig Senior thanked the Guernsey service for its support.

‘We are extremely honoured to work alongside the Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service,’ he said.

‘Our on-island team benefit hugely from their exceptional levels of training and experience which is invaluable to the Herm community.

‘We have always found GFRS very supportive over the many years we have worked together, and we thank them most sincerely for their continuing investment, first class training and ongoing support of the Herm team.’
