The month-long challenge was launched with an opening day breakfast for all riders at the Kiln on Saturday.

This year 101 participants are taking part in the challenge which requires riders to cycle for at least one hour every day for a month.

‘This year we have had a very big intake and there has been quite a loud buzz around here this morning,’ said organiser Ian Brown at the breakfast on Saturday morning.

A third of this year’s riders are taking part for the first time.

‘I’m really looking forward to the challenge,’ said one of them, Aileen Finnerty, riding alongside her parents Eamonn and Ann, who have both participated before.

‘This is our 10th but our daughter’s first,’ said Mr Finnerty.

The challenge has attracted teams as well as individuals.

‘I got involved through work, there is a team of five of us from Jacksons,’ said Sam Bardell.

‘It’s my first time, but I am a regular rider – but I am sure there are some people in our team who are feeling a bit nervous.’

Twelve of this year’s riders have participated in the challenge 10 or more times.

‘This is my 10th time doing it,’ said Carry Wray, who is riding with members of her extended family.

‘I am feeling really good about the challenge this year.’

The final day of the challenge is Sunday 26 May when the riders will meet up again at Ian Brown’s Cycle Shop to ride to finish of the Rock to Rocque bike ride at North Beach.
