Old Guernsey Press cuttings, school logbooks and work projects were displayed in the school hall for people to reminisce about their school years and share memories.

They also had an opportunity to look around the site and see how it had changed.

The current pupils at the school were also involved, with their work on the history of the school displayed and ideas for the future suggested.

Robert Ayres, 8, and his family, created a poem about the schools and their history. He drew around the edge to illustrate it.

‘It’s all my favourite things about school. I’ve drawn the beach near the school, the school pool where we do our Swimarathon and even the teachers who were here in the olden days when the school opened,’ he said.

Livvy McGeoch, 9, designed a poster with 50 things she loves about the school – one for each of the 50 years of its existence.

‘My brother helped me with it and he also went to school here,’ she said.

‘My favourite things about school are my friends and numeracy, but I’ve also included things like school council and geography.’

The school is currently 60% through a £10,000 fundraising goal to make some improvements. Ideas so far include decorating the corridors with a history timeline, and a wall to celebrate people involved in the STEM subjects.

Visitors were invited to leave their suggestions of what should be included in a timeline and map of Guernsey, and what else could improve the school.

Charlotte Sarre, 9, wanted to put forward her suggestion for a school mascot, Leo the lion.

She drew a picture of a lion wearing a LMDC PE top as her idea for what the mascot should look like.

‘When I think of La Mare I think of a lion, I don’t know why,’ she said. ‘I think Leo the Lion should be our school mascot and come to our sports days and Swimarathon events.’

The school will continue hosting 50th events for the rest of the academic year.
