16-year wait ended as Guernsey win back Women’s Muratti

Vicki Rang’s header midway through the first half and Calleigh Hedley’s late penalty ended Guernsey’s 16-year wait for Women’s Muratti success, sparking joyous Sarnian celebrations at a largely deflated Springfield.

The previous two Muratti clashes on Jersey soil had finished 9-0 and 5-0 to the hosts, and the reds again went into the game as favourites. But there was a different aura about this Guernsey squad, as they further demonstrated their resilience and the progress made in recent years.

‘I don’t think the smile’s going to go any time soon,’ said emotional manager Anna Gauvain.

Rang, who was named player of the match, added: ‘It has been a long wait, but it feels fantastic. It’s been a long journey and finally the girls in Guernsey are having the opportunities available to them to further their football pathway and play decent, competitive, regular football and it can only get better from there.
