Canines were competing in nine different categories, with prizes for best male and female dogs, golden oldie for dogs over the age of seven, and overall best in show.

That prize was claimed by Griffin, a five-year-old greyhound, who owners Jo Ferguson and Matt Le Page rescued from Ireland just over a year ago.

‘He’s our second greyhound rescue, and it’s the first time we’ve entered him in something like this,’ said Miss Ferguson.

‘Our first greyhound actually won this competition five years ago so clearly they’re a lucky breed.’

Mr Page added that he expected Griffin to sleep for the rest of the day following his victory.

‘He’s very excited and a bit overwhelmed, I think.’

GSPCA judge Terry Buckley said she chose Griffin as her winner because of his chilled, calm demeanour.

‘He was the one I wanted to take home with me the most, he put his head on me when I came up to him and was a big softy.’
