‘We would love England to go all the way’

FINGERS are crossed at the KGV that England can go all the way to the final of Euro 2024 and that everyone can enjoy the journey on its big screens.

Wednesday’s unexpected results, when Georgia beat Portugal, have potentially opened up an 'easier' path through the knockout phases for England to repeat the achievements of summer 2021 and reaching the final of that Euros competition.

England next play in the round of 16 tomorrow at 5pm against Slovakia.

‘We have had all England’s group games on the big screen so far,’ said bar and events manager Sarah de Carteret.

‘We had about 250 for the first match and were up to 400 for Tuesday night’s match, but the matches have been a bit of a damp squib so far.

'Against Slovenia everyone was really happy drinking beer and eating burgers on the grass. We were waiting for the big scream when England scored, but it never came.

‘I think this next match will be much more exciting as it’s knockout football and someone has to win. I know most England fans wouldn’t agree, but I quite enjoy penalties. That’s when the atmosphere gets really exciting.’

The KGV was buzzing as an open air venue during the 2020 Euros, held in 2021 because of Covid postponements, when England lost to Italy in the final.

If England beat Slovenia they may well face a rematch against the Italians in the quarter-finals next Saturday.

‘We had 1,500 for that match three years ago,’ said Miss de Carteret. ‘We would love England to go all the way to the final – and hopefully win it.’
