Historically the focus has been on the community competition, with the winner selected to represent the island at the national Britain in Bloom competition.

But with just three community entrants this year – St Saviour’s, Herm and Alderney – there is a much greater focus on groups and businesses.

Floral Guernsey chairman John Woodward said lots of people were involved.

‘The whole island is taking part in one way or another,’ he said.

‘We have moved away from the emphasis on the community competition. We have [smaller] community awards, which cover various categories and are open to all islanders and groups.’

There are douzaine room and constables office classes, as well as recognition for aspects like tourism and nature.

A new category this year is the kiosk and cafe class.

‘We have had a dozen or so entries for that, including two in Herm,’ Mr Woodward said.

‘So those will be interesting to see.’

Mr Woodward said the floral awards had changed over the years, but still played an important part in the community. The judging was not just about the best flowers, but also environmental and community aspects.

‘I think it engenders pride in where we live,’ he said.

‘It may inspire people to look after their own gardens. There are also benefits for tourism.’

The judging started yesterday, with St Saviour’s set to be judged today. Mr Woodward said he was crossing his fingers for good weather, with the judges due to sail to Sark on Tuesday and Herm on Wednesday, and then fly to Alderney on Thursday.

The judging is due to finish next Friday.

There are two judges. Former Floral St Peter Port member Jax Robin is judging for the first time. She is being joined by long-time judge and horticulturist Rae Beckwith from Newcastle. He has judged many times in the island and is also an experienced RHS judge.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in September.
