Guernsey’s fourth biggest primary school was inspected at the start of June.

Inspectors said pupils were at the centre of the school’s culture, with children feeling safe and nurtured.

Pupils also live up to the school’s high expectations, with pupils following rules such as the three Ws for corridors – walk, whisper, wait.

‘Consequently, pupils know how to behave,’ the inspectors said.

‘Pupils say that bullying can sometimes happen, but that adults will sort it out quickly. During social times, pupils play well together.’

The curriculum is broad and balanced, with pupils achieving well.

However the inspectors did raise concerns that pupils do not connect new learning with prior knowledge and that pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities needed more specific targets and strategies.

Pupils learn to read successfully, and any child that falls behind was given rapid support

But there were worries about handwriting.

‘The quality of handwriting is inconsistent across the school, particularly in the younger years,’ the inspectors noted.

‘This is because there is variation in how well teachers model handwriting.

‘This results in pupils making errors in both size and letter formation.’

The inspectors noted that leaders have taken decisive action to enhance the curriculum offer.

‘Staff are well supported and valued by leaders through this time of change.’

Vauvert headteacher Adrian Paul said they were delighted with the report.

‘It was pleasing to see Ofsted recognise that we are an inclusive school with high expectations, that our curriculum is ambitious and that children achieve well,’ he said.

‘To achieve gradings of good in all areas is recognition of the hard work put in by the staff team and validates the work that we have been doing.

‘We know that there is much still to do and concur with the areas identified by Ofsted for development.’

Director of Education Nick Hynes said that Vauvert was the latest primary school to achieve good in all five categories, which further established that the local primary education system in Guernsey was delivering good results.
