The former Commonwealth Games and Island Games competitor was described as a ‘household name’ by nominator Deputy Steve Falla and he went on to garner 45 votes from the 84 members, which included current jurats, douzaine representatives, rectors, law officers and deputies.

By gaining more than half of the votes, he avoided the need for a second round of voting. Specsavers marketeer Catherine O’Sullivan attracted 20 votes, while financier Andrew Courtney had 18, with one spoiled paper.

Deputy Falla – who has known Mr Brown since their school days at the old Boys’ Grammar – had emphasised his strength, stamina and tenacity in achieving a long list of impressive sporting results over a long career, while simultaneously building up a ‘self-employed one-man-band’ company into one of the most recognisable brands on the island – a company which now has three partners and 10 other employees.

Now in his sixties, and having recovered from a cancer diagnosis, Mr Brown had stepped back from full-time work and therefore had time to devote to the office of jurat, Deputy Falla said.

The discipline and commitment shown during his seven Island Games appearances, two Commonwealth Games outings and 15 representations of Great Britain would also be needed on the jurat’s bench, he said.

Seconding his nomination, Deputy Heidi Soulsby noted that he had helped co-found the Male Uprising Guernsey charity in 2012.
