Quadbiker on Herm rushed to hospital after cliff crash
A quadbiker on Herm had to be rushed to hospital on the marine ambulance after the vehicle tumbled over a cliff onto the beach.
The incident happened around 3pm on Friday afternoon, shortly after the Herm Trident arrived with a boatload of day trippers.
An eyewitness said that the accident happened en-route to the campsite.
‘The quad was carrying our luggage and went past us up the hill, our son was directly behind the quad when he suddenly hit the brakes, started skidding, then lost control and rolled off the cliff to the left,’ she said.
‘It landed upside down and basically crumpled up on the rocks down below. All the men in our group rushed down the cliff to the driver’s aid, and everyone started dialling 999 for help. The poor driver was in a very bad state.’
She added that staff from Herm then arrived and helped move the driver to the harbour.
‘We are all just so relieved that our kids weren’t on the back of the quad.’
A St John Ambulance spokesman said the patient was treated by the ambulance crew before being transferred onto the Flying Christine for the journey back to St Peter Port.
‘On return to Guernsey, at around 4.30pm, the fire service assisted with transferring the patient to a waiting road ambulance for the journey to the Emergency Department,’ he said.
‘Ambulance & Rescue would like to thank the volunteer boat crew and Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service who assisted with this case’.
A spokesman for the emergency services said the driver remained in hospital in a stable condition.
Herm Island referred all queries about the incident to the emergency services.
There are no cars on Herm, but quad bikes are used by staff to move heavy items around the island.
