Entries high but rain deters Royal show crowds
Entries were up but attendance was understandably down at the Royal Guernsey Agricultural & Horticultural Society’s annual show.
While organisers were pleased with the 37 cows and 41 sheep entered into the show, the consistent rain was enough to deter show-goers from venturing outside.
‘The event is scheduled to be just after the schools break up but before people start going on holiday,’ said Ray Watts, supervising his last show as society president after 10 years in the role.
‘It’s usually a great activity for people to come along for free, see the animals and have an ice-cream, but unfortunately the weather is not on our side today.’
Those attending huddled under trees and umbrellas while the animals were judged.
The Vintage Agricultural Show takes place next weekend in St Peter’s.
‘The forecast is meant to be a lot better and we have animals arriving from Tuesday on the ferry,’ said Rodney Dyke.
‘It’s a shame that the weather is like this today because it’s a great event, but hopefully people can come and see what the industry is about at the Vintage Agricultural Show.’
The show is a step back in time to the 1950s, and includes live animals, tractor and military displays, sheep racing and entertainment.
