Poor weather meant there were few people on the beach, but after spotting the white vehicle in the water, several onlookers went onto the sand to take photographs while many more lined the wall overlooking the bay.

And motorists queuing at the temporary traffic lights along the coast road were able to get a good view as a small team set to work recovering the stricken Renault.

At about 4.30pm, after one man waded out to attach a tow rope, a Toyota truck began slowly pulling the van towards the shore.

Water poured out of the van when the doors were opened. (33479985)

There was a moment where it appeared that the truck itself might have become stuck but this passed and after a tense couple of minutes the other vehicle was pulled from the water.

Sea water poured out when the doors were opened, revealing that the van was full of kayaks.

Two of the men who had recovered it set about getting the vehicle ready to tow away.

Nobody was prepared to say exactly what had happened.
