Reservoir wall gets cleared
Abseilers have started their project to clear debris down the dam at St Saviour’s Reservoir, as the walkway shuts for two months.
Geomarine has been contracted to do the work, of which the cleaning up of the dam is the first phase.
‘We are doing some routine maintenance to the dam for Guernsey Water, which involves cleaning out the construction joints on the dam base, removing any debris and routine maintenance to the underside of the bridge,’ said Geomarine graduate civil engineer John White.
‘This phase of the works will probably take us about a week and a half and there is more work to follow.’
He added that it was mainly moss and grasses that grew on the dam, and the work would improve draining and prevent it from blocking.
‘The dam seems to be stable, this work isn’t an annual thing but when needed,’ he said.
After the vegetation growing on the dam has been cleared, work with then start on the water-side of the wall, where a cantilevered platform will be constructed to allow teams access.
From there they will undertake localised concrete repairs to keep the wall in good condition.
The walkway is closed to the public for two months due to the equipment required by workers, but the remainder of the Millennium Walk is open as usual, with access from the Rue des Choffins side.
The timing of this work was chosen for when the water levels were lower and the work could be completed.
