THIS Year’s Pride of Guernsey shortlisted candidates are being contacted, after a record-breaking number of votes were cast and counted.

The newspaper’s community awards aim to recognise people from across all sectors of island’s life.

And this year islanders were clamouring to support their favourites.

There were 39,011 votes cast, with 37,841 online and 1,170 in paper votes.

‘We have been overwhelmed by the voting response this year,’ said Guernsey Press editor James Falla.

‘After 10 years we are still finding great people doing great things and with great stories to tell in our community, and with the number of votes cast going up by a third on last year, they clearly have caught the attention of the public.’

There were hundreds of votes in all of the 14 categories, but the carer and overcoming adversity classes in particular saw a high number of votes.

Now the shortlist has been chosen, judging panels will select the winners. Each panel comprises a sponsor representative, someone from the Guernsey Press and an independent judge.

Once the winner is chosen, the decision is kept secret until the awards night.

‘Now we’re really looking forward to the winners being selected and the awards evening on Saturday 19 October,’ Mr Falla said.

The Pride awards ceremony takes place at St Pierre Park, with all the shortlisted candidates and the sponsors attending.

Last year the Pride of Guernsey awards received just under 30,000 votes.
