The postbox was painted, along with the Market Steps, at the beginning of September ahead of the pan-island event, but sometime between Thursday and Friday it was covered with blue and red spray paint.

‘We hope that this is just vandalism, but sadly we are seeing a rise in homophobia and transphobia not just globally but locally too,’ said Liberate CEO Ellie Jones.

‘It’s just a bit sad really that someone is that upset by some other people being represented and visible that they want to commit a crime.

‘It will be interesting to see if the police do find the person/people responsible, as if it is motivated by hate then they tend to get handed a harsher punishment because we follow the UK’s sentencing guidelines – and they have hate crime laws.’

The postbox is painted by Guernsey Post, rather than Liberate or CI Pride organisers.

‘We are disappointed to see the vandalism of the rainbow postbox, but we are committed to restoring its vibrant design soon,’ said a Guernsey Post spokesperson.

‘It’s been a popular and much-photographed symbol of pride and inclusivity, and we want the community to continue enjoying it for as long as possible.’
