Carmen and Graham Skuse met through friends and got engaged on 9 May 1964.

They married in October of the same year at Cobo Mission.

When asked their secret to a long and happy marriage, Mrs Skuse said, ‘I am in charge’ – and Mr Skuse agreed.

‘It’s a bit of give and take and respecting each others’ interests. Graham has sporting interests, I go to church,’ said Mrs Skuse.

‘It feels like time has absolutely flown by, you visualise your youth and look at old photographs and I just can’t believe that was 60 years ago.’

The couple had their wedding reception at the Cobo Tea Room, which in today’s money cost 37.5p per head.

Other than four years in Wales from 1968, the couple have lived in Guernsey since their marriage, and have lived in the same house for 48 years.

Before retirement, Mr Skuse was a well-known postman and Mrs Skuse worked at Guernsey Telecoms.

They have two children and two grandchildren.

To celebrate their diamond wedding they will spend today with friends and family, and have a celebration planned at Saumarez Park at the weekend.

Mr Skuse said he summed up the marriage with reference to an Edith Piaf song. ‘Non, je ne regrette rien’, he said.
