ISLANDERS turned out in huge numbers to get a slice of a cake sale held in memory of James Robilliard on Saturday.

James died in August aged just 33 having suffered from a brain tumour diagnosed in 2020.

The hall at the Shiloh Church, Landes du Marche, was packed within five minutes of the doors opening at 2pm, with cars queuing down the road to get into the car park.

Hundreds of cakes of every size and flavour imaginable were donated by family and friends and helped to raise more than £4,000 for The Brain Tumour Charity.

Among the volunteers selling cakes and helping out were James’s seven-year-old twins Ed and Sid.

James’s mum Hayley Bull said the cakes had started flooding in that morning.

‘I was worried we would not get any,’ she said.

‘I had originally envisaged just me and the twins doing a cake sale at home and it just escalated.

‘The church have been amazing. The whole congregation have baked cakes as well. It makes you realise how much James was loved. He knew a lot of people and every one of them has supported us.’

Mrs Bull organised an afternoon tea last year to raise funds for the charity, but this was the first event she had put on since her son’s death.

‘We had a ball planned for October which we had to cancel,’ she said. ‘But we really still hope to put the event on next year.’

Such has been the support from the community, Mrs Bull is now considering starting a charity in James’s memory.

‘His birthday was on 27 February and I’d like to start an event every year near that date,’ she said. ‘So many people under 40 are affected and it is something we need to raise awareness of.’
